Our Story

Second Sunrise Studio was created from lived experience, hope and the belief that even after the hardest chapters in life, healing, growth and a new beginning are possible.

A second sunrise after the darkest chapter.

I became very unwell and suffered a major stroke that left me paralysed from the neck down. I could not walk. I could not use my arms or hands. I could not speak or communicate in any way. I spent months in a hospital bed feeling frightened, isolated and believing that the life I had imagined for myself was over.

Everything I had planned, hoped for and worked towards suddenly felt out of reach.

Like many people living with disability, illness or major life changes, I experienced grief, depression, loss of identity and the overwhelming feeling that I no longer knew who I was. For a long time, I withdrew from the world around me.

But one day, something shifted. I realised that although life may never look exactly the same as it once did, I did not want to give up on myself. I decided I wanted to try. From that moment on, I committed myself to rehabilitation, recovery and rebuilding my life.

Slowly, I began talking again. I began moving my body again. Eventually, I was able to walk, regain my independence and learn how to care for myself again.

That journey changed me forever.

It showed me that even when life changes in ways we never expected, there can still be joy, purpose, confidence and hope on the other side.

It taught me resilience, determination and the importance of having people around you who believe in you, especially when you are struggling to believe in yourself.

Once I was well enough, I re-enrolled in university, but this time with a very different purpose. I wanted to help others navigate the kinds of challenges I had experienced, and I wanted to make sure they did not have to do it alone.

I went on to graduate with distinction, build a meaningful career and gain experience supporting others, all while carrying the dream of one day creating something of my own.

That dream became Second Sunrise Studio.

Second Sunrise Studio was built to be the kind of support I wish I had during the hardest time in my life. The kind of support that reminds you that you are not broken, you are not alone, and you are still capable of building a meaningful life.

A space where people living with disability, mental health challenges or major life changes can feel safe, understood and empowered. A space where people are seen as a whole person, not just a diagnosis. A space where growth is celebrated, progress is honoured and hope is always possible. Because sometimes life gives us a second sunrise.

A second chance to reconnect with ourselves. A second chance to believe in what is possible. A second chance to create a life that feels fulfilling, hopeful and true to who we are. And when it does, we deserve support to help us step into it.
